Topography as a starting point for design In many design processes, topography is treated as a given or as a consequence of the architecture and the work. In landscape architecture, this approach is reductive. Topographical definition is a structural decision, with a direct impact on uses, vegetation and the way water moves through the territory.

Christophe Girot's practice and thinking reinforce this idea by seeing the land - and its transformation through groundwork - as the fundamental gesture of the landscape. Ground modelling is not just technical, it is the act that reconfigures the place and establishes the basis of the project.

Topography is not just moving earth There is a clear difference between moving earth to make a site feasible and working the land as a project material. In the first case, you're responding to a construction need; in the second, you're building structure, continuity and landscape identity.

In Girot's thinking, groundwork is a transformative operation: by designing the terrain, spatial relationships, hierarchies and the way the place will be perceived and used over time are defined.

The direct impact of topography on the use of space Topography profoundly conditions use. Small variations in elevation define routes, permanence zones, transition areas or shelter spaces. Use is not imposed by added elements, but emerges from the very configuration of the terrain.

A topography designed as part of the project creates legible and intuitive spaces. When this definition is fragile or delayed, use becomes dependent on corrective solutions, often alien to the initial logic of the project.

Topography, water and vegetation: inseparable relationships The shape of the terrain determines how water moves, infiltrates or accumulates, and these dynamics directly influence the behaviour of vegetation. Soil depth, available moisture and stability are direct results of topographic modelling.

This is where Peter Petschek's contribution becomes particularly relevant. His work centres on water management in the territory, understanding topography as the means by which water can be conducted, delayed, stored or infiltrated in a controlled manner.

Rainwater drainage: design the system before the infrastructure Water routes are defined by elevations. When topography is thought of as

system, drainage ceases to be just a technical problem and becomes an integral part of the project.

The approach advocated by Peter Petschek shows that the creation of water management means - ditches, depressions, retention basins or permeable surfaces - depends on a fine reading of the terrain and its modelling.

Irrigation as a complement, not a correction Irrigation should not correct modelling errors. When the topography is clear and coherent, irrigation acts as a complement, reinforcing a water system already structured by the terrain.

Conclusion The terrain is the primary subject of landscape design. The topographic definition structures the space, conditions the use, supports the vegetation and defines the behaviour of the water.

O conteúdo Topografia como decisão estrutural de projeto em Arquitetura Paisagista aparece primeiro em Arquitectura Paisagista | ALA - Algarve Landscape Architects.

In a garden, maintenance is not just a routine task — it’s a natural extension of the design process. Over time, conditions shift: plants grow and change, soil behaviour evolves, irrigation systems may fall out of sync, and subtle issues start to show. How we respond to this change is essential to preserving the quality of the space.

Regular technical inspections, supported by a careful photographic record and clear reporting, make it possible to assess the garden objectively and act promptly. This approach helps to:

Ensure irrigation systems are performing efficiently, with adjusted schedules and replacement of faulty components;

Identify plants with poor development or losses, proposing appropriate replacements;

Densify plantings where necessary, improving ground coverage and enhancing visual cohesion;

Address structural issues, such as settlement in artificial turf or wear in circulation areas;

Monitor how different areas of the garden evolve throughout the seasons, allowing for timely adjustments.

Beyond the technical aspects, monitoring is also a means of maintaining a strong relationship with the client. It shows that the garden is being cared for with intention, ensuring the investment continues to deliver value, both aesthetically and functionally.

> Maintaining a garden is a continuous commitment. Careful observation, accurate documentation, and informed action are what turn basic upkeep into true landscape stewardship.

At ALA – Algarve Landscape Architects, we carry out this technical monitoring regularly, adapting our approach to the character of each site and the needs of each client. We believe a great garden is built every day — with attention, consistency, and long-term vision.

O conteúdo A importância de acompanhar a manutenção dos jardins aparece primeiro em Arquitectura Paisagista | ALA - Algarve Landscape Architects.

When it comes to transforming an outdoor space, the decision between doing it yourself or hiring a professional can be difficult. However, opting for a professional landscaper offers a number of advantages that can make all the difference. Let's explore why entrusting this task to a specialist is the right choice.

Expertise and Knowledge

Professional landscapers have a wealth of experience and knowledge about plants, soils and climatic conditions. They know exactly which species are best suited to the Algarve climate and how to look after them so that they thrive throughout the year. Unlike experimenting by trial and error, a professional ensures that each plant chosen is the most suitable for the specific space and conditions.

Saving Time

One of the great advantages of hiring a landscaper is that it saves you time. Creating and maintaining a garden can be a time-consuming task, especially without the necessary tools or expertise. A professional landscaper manages the entire process, from planning to execution, allowing you to enjoy your new outdoor space without the stress associated with maintenance.

High-quality results

Professionals bring with them a level of quality that is often difficult to achieve with projects done on your own. They use specialised tools and appropriate techniques to ensure that the end result is not only aesthetically appealing, but also long-lasting. What's more, many services include guarantees, offering peace of mind in the knowledge that your investment is protected.

Increase in property value

A well-designed and maintained garden not only improves the aesthetics of a home, it can also significantly increase its value. Studies show that professionally landscaped properties can see their market value rise by up to 20%. If you're thinking of selling in the future, investing in landscaping services is a smart decision.

Creativity and personalisation

Landscape designers have an artistic vision and can turn ideas into reality. They offer creative suggestions that may not have been considered and create unique spaces that reflect the owner's personality and lifestyle. With the help of a professional, the garden can become a real haven.

Sustainability and Ecological Practices

Professionals are often up-to-date on the best sustainable practices. They can implement solutions such as water-efficient irrigation systems and choose native plants that promote biodiversity. This not only helps the environment, but also ensures that the garden will be easier to maintain.

Contact Algarve Landscape today and find out how they can bring your dream garden to life! The team is just a phone call away, ready to transform any outdoor space into a natural masterpiece.

O conteúdo Por Que Deveria Contratar um Paisagista Profissional? aparece primeiro em Arquitectura Paisagista | ALA - Algarve Landscape Architects.

Creating a sustainable garden is an excellent way to transform your outdoor space into a beautiful, functional and environmentally friendly haven. In the Algarve, with its hot, dry climate, the challenges of sustainable gardening include effective water management and choosing plants that can withstand these conditions. However, with the right techniques, you can create a garden that requires little maintenance, uses few resources and even contributes to the preservation of local biodiversity.

In this article, we'll explore some strategies and tips for creating a sustainable garden in the Algarve.

1. Choosing native and drought-tolerant plants

The first step towards a sustainable garden in the Algarve is to select plants that adapt well to the region's climate. Native plants are the best option, as they are naturally adapted to the local soil and climate and are more resistant to pests and diseases. They also require less water and care.

Some native or drought-tolerant plants you might consider include:

LavenderAromatic and with colourful flowers, it adapts well to the heat and needs little water.

RosemaryIdeal for dry areas, with a pleasant scent and easy to maintain.

Cactus and succulents: Excellent options for low-maintenance gardens.

Mediterranean fruit treesSuch as the olive tree and the carob tree, which are robust and require little water.

These plants not only reduce the need for irrigation, but also help attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, promoting biodiversity.

2. Efficient Irrigation: Less is More

Water is a scarce resource in the Algarve, especially during the hot summer months. That's why one of the pillars of a sustainable garden is the efficient use of water.

Here are some ways to optimise irrigation:

Drip irrigation systemsThese systems ensure that water is supplied directly to the plant roots, reducing waste.

Rainwater harvestingInstalling rainwater harvesting systems can be an effective way of storing water for use during the dry season.

Watering at appropriate times: Watering the garden in the early hours of the morning or at the end of the day helps to minimise water evaporation.

Also, consider the mulching (covering the soil with organic materials such as pine bark or dry leaves), as it helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing the need for frequent watering.

3. Use of Natural and Improved Soils

The health of the soil is fundamental to the success of a sustainable garden. In the Algarve, soils can be sandy or clayey, both with specific challenges in terms of water and nutrient retention. To improve the soil in a sustainable way:

Add organic matterHome composting or purchased compost can improve the structure of the soil, increasing its capacity to retain water and nutrients.

Avoid chemical fertilisersChoose organic fertilisers, such as compost or manure, which enrich the soil without polluting the environment.

Also, avoid excessive use of chemical herbicides and pesticides, which can damage the soil and harm beneficial insects. The use of natural alternatives, such as biological pest control, is a more ecological option.

4. Intelligent Spatial Planning

A sustainable garden should also be practical and efficient in terms of space and use of resources. Here are some tips for maximising your space:

Group plants with similar needsBy planting species with similar watering and sun requirements together, you can optimise watering and ensure that all plants are in ideal conditions.

Create shadow zones: The intense sun of the Algarve can be too strong for many plants and for those who use the garden. By including shade trees, pergolas or trellises covered with climbing plants, you can create cooler areas and reduce the need for irrigation in some areas.

Integrate edible plantsTo increase the sustainability of your garden, consider growing some edible plants, such as aromatic herbs (basil, oregano), vegetables (tomatoes, peppers) or fruit trees (figs, pomegranates). These plants not only contribute to your diet, but can also be grown using sustainable techniques.

5. Recycling and Reusing Materials

A sustainable approach also includes choosing recycled or reused materials for garden design. Some examples:

Pavements and flowerbeds made from recycled materialsUse local or recycled materials, such as natural stone or reclaimed wood, for paving, fences and garden furniture.

Recycling green wasteReuse prunings and leaves to make compost, which will reduce waste and provide valuable nutrients for the soil.

6. Focus on Biodiversity

A sustainable garden should promote local wildlife. By choosing plants that attract pollinating insects and birds, you are helping the biodiversity of your area. In addition, including small water sources, such as bird feeders, can create a balanced ecosystem in your garden.

O conteúdo Como Criar um Jardim Sustentável no Algarve aparece primeiro em Arquitectura Paisagista | ALA - Algarve Landscape Architects.
