- Inventory of all existing trees;
- Delimitation of perimeters to protect existing trees, thus preventing damage in the medium to long term;
- Provision of a functional programme compatible with the areas suitable for intervention;
- Integration of urban leisure furniture to enable people to enjoy this leisure and recreational area.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSAL
Based on the aforementioned assumptions, the existing trees were surveyed.
It is planned to preserve all the existing cork oaks (with the exception of one specimen that is already dead) and to cut down four grevilleas (Grevillea robusta), a species introduced during the construction of the local road. These four specimens show significant damage that jeopardises their vegetative viability, which is why this proposal calls for their felling.
By measuring the Perimeter at Breast Height, the respective Diameter at Breast Height was determined, a metric used to determine the Critical Root Zone according to Coder (1996) and Fite and Smiley (2008). In order to avoid transformations of the local relief, the areas defined as slopes by the topographic survey that served as the basis for this Preliminary Study were also taken into account. The existing cycle path will also be preserved.
Once the analysis was complete, the intervention programme was defined:
- Installation of a kiosk with an adjacent esplanade area;
- Definition of areas for relaxation and leisure equipped with street furniture and physical exercise (streetworkout);
- Maintenance of the existing cycle path and its upgrading;
- Compensation for culls to be carried out, in accordance with the applicable legislation (Law no. 59/2021, of 18 August);
- Inclusion of a shrub curtain adjacent to the plots bordering the intervention area.
